Museum quality fabric quiltThis rare find is stunning. I've seen many quilts over the last 30 years but never a Civil War era quilt with such vivid coloration and one that has never been washed. This quilt has unique value in the integrity of its beautiful old fabrics. They look like they were bought yesterday! All hand pieced and quilted straight lined throughout the blocks. its obvious that this was not a quilt made with scrapes as so many are in this period, but larger pieces were bought to use in different places throughout. Also the backing is a charming striped cotton which was more costly to use than muslin that was the usual economic way to back. it includes your beautiful Madder reds, Prussian blues, pale salmon pinks, and I even saw a light purple piece so typical of the period- and of course browns and beiges which were plentiful in that period. Its age is also validated by the batting which is wool.
During this period, there were many hardships and quilts were of utilitarian use. That is probably why this crisp, vivid colored fabric is so rare. This quilt has some stains-one large one in the right bottom corner, and smaller ones throughout- please see photo close ups. There is not one worn, or torn area on this remarkable quilt. I saw a few places where it looked like the piece of fabric wasn't large enough for the 2 1/2" X 5 1/2" blocks so it was pieced together. I purposely have not washed it. There is no musty or unpleasant smell. I believe it is more valuable historically and monetarily without.
If not for the stains, I would donate it to a museum.
If you are looking for a quilt with heavily hand quilted with feathering, etc. and thousand of tiny pieces, this quilt is not it. Its uniqueness and beauty lies in the historic condition of the rare fabrics
The hand quilting is nicely done and is 6-7 stitches per inch uniformly throughout. It measures 66' X 72". The quilt is thin and cozy and would be a treasure to own and display. Please email me with any questions.
