Antique Tunbridge Ware Thread WaxerEnglish * Circa 1880
This little antique piece was made in Tunbridge Wells in the county of Kent, England in the Victorian era. It's in the form of a barrel and unscrews to reveal a piece
of beeswax for strengthening sewing thread.
This style of waxer had the advantage of not getting wax on other items in the work basket.
Both ends have a mosaic star
pattern created using pieces of different naturally colored woods.
The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or loss and it screws together well. It measures 1 1/4" high and 7/8" in diameter. Several Tunbridge ware needlework tools are shown on pages. 125 & 138 of Gay Ann Rogers' excellent book
An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools
